Five Nordic purchasing organisations are preparing a broader joint tender for intravenous medicines, extending existing Denmark–Norway–Iceland cooperation to include purchasers in Sweden and Finland.
Nordic hospital purchasers have opened supplier dialogue on a joint 2028 procurement covering 15 intravenous medicines. The exercise expands the established collaboration between Denmark, Norway and Iceland by adding Region Skåne in Sweden and HUS Group in Finland for selected products.
The Danish purchaser Amgros is coordinating the dialogue with Norwegian Hospital Procurement Trust (Sykehusinnkjøp HF), Iceland's Landspítali, Region Skåne and HUS Group. Online supplier meetings will run during September and October 2026, with the resulting agreements expected to start on 1 April 2028.
Participation will vary by medicine. All five organisations intend to procure ampicillin, ciprofloxacin, benzylpenicillin and vancomycin jointly. Denmark, Norway, Iceland and HUS Group will also collaborate on piperacillin with beta-lactamase inhibitor, cefuroxime, gentamicin, metronidazole and meropenem. Smaller groups of purchasers will tender paracetamol and five further injectable medicines.
The Nordic joint-procurement model has previously centred on Denmark, Norway and Iceland. In March, the three countries launched a joint tender for 13 cytostatics, using pooled demand to attract more suppliers and strengthen supply security in relatively small markets. That tender weighted price at 30%, with quality, sustainability and security of supply accounting for the remaining 70%.
The 2028 programme broadens both participation and product scope. Inclusion of Swedish and Finnish purchasers in selected lots increases the potential demand aggregated through the model, while the concentration on injectable antibiotics extends joint procurement further into medicines where resilient supply is clinically important. The product-by-product participation model also allows cooperation to expand without requiring identical procurement needs across all five organisations.
