Austrian industry expects US MFN pricing to slow reimbursement
Austria’s pharmaceutical industry has identified US most-favoured-nation pricing as a direct risk to launch sequencing and reimbursement negotiations. The annual survey frames the international pricing initiative as a new external constraint on Austrian access discussions.
The Austrian Pharmaceutical Industry Association (Verband der pharmazeutischen Industrie Österreichs, PHARMIG) published its 2026 pharmaceutical industry barometer (PHARMA-Branchenbarometer 2026) on 14 July. Peter Hajek Public Opinion Strategies conducted the online survey between 12 May and 8 June, receiving 107 responses from 558 invited contacts at PHARMIG member companies.
The strongest access signal concerns reimbursement timing. Ninety-one per cent expected MFN pricing to lengthen medicine reimbursement and financing processes, while 87% considered delayed patient access to innovative medicines likely.
The underlying survey results also show 84% expecting fewer product launches and 79% expecting lower investment in Austria. PHARMIG’s accompanying release gives 69% and 65% respectively; those figures correspond to the survey’s net balances after responses judging the effects unlikely are subtracted.
The US policy gives these expectations a clear pricing mechanism. By April 2026, the US administration had reached MFN agreements with 17 leading manufacturers, covering 86% of the branded US market. Its May policy paper says prospective MFN links prices for new US launches to prices in other high-income countries and is intended to put upward pressure on prices paid elsewhere.
If Austrian prices influence those international comparisons, manufacturers have stronger incentives to resist lower negotiated prices, extend reimbursement discussions or place Austria later in launch sequences.
PHARMIG has called for new financing models and a reassessment of how innovation is reimbursed. The findings are forward-looking industry expectations, but they show how US pricing policy may increasingly shape Austrian access through company launch and negotiation strategy.
